Musculoskeletal Assessment in Podiatry

What Is a Musculoskeletal Assessment in Podiatry?

Foot and ankle pain can affect much more than your feet. It may make walking, exercising, standing at work or enjoying everyday activities uncomfortable.

A musculoskeletal assessment helps a podiatrist investigate how the feet and related lower-limb structures move and function.

What does a musculoskeletal assessment involve?

Depending on your symptoms, medical history and individual needs, an assessment may include:

  • Medical and symptom history: Understanding where the pain occurs, when it started and what makes it better or worse.
  • Joint movement: Assessing the movement of the foot and ankle.
  • Muscle strength: Evaluating relevant muscle function.
  • Foot posture: Observing foot alignment and structure.
  • Gait analysis: Assessing walking patterns and how the feet interact with the ground.
  • Functional movements: Observing activities such as standing, walking or other movements relevant to your symptoms.

Additional investigations or referral may be appropriate when indicated.

What conditions can it help assess?

A musculoskeletal assessment may form part of the investigation and management of conditions such as:

  • Plantar fasciitis and certain types of heel pain.
  • Achilles tendon-related pain.
  • Foot and ankle discomfort.
  • Sports-related lower-limb injuries.
  • Certain biomechanical concerns.
  • Pain associated with walking or prolonged standing.

The assessment does not automatically identify a single cause of pain. Findings must be considered alongside your history and, where necessary, further investigations.

Why is an assessment important?

Treating pain without understanding the contributing factors may not address the underlying problem. An assessment helps guide an appropriate management plan, which may include exercises, footwear advice, activity modification, orthotics or referral to another healthcare professional.

Treatment is individualised, and not every patient will require the same approach.
